A Legacy
Written in Sound.
Carrying the
Legacy Forward.
As the organization looks toward its next chapter, the Savannah Wind Symphony remains rooted in its founding spirit while embracing a bold future for music, performance, and community connection in Savannah.
Led by Artistic Excellence.
Today, the Savannah Wind Symphony continues to build on that legacy with renewed vision and purpose.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, the organization is committed to presenting compelling performances, supporting musicians, inspiring audiences, and creating meaningful opportunities for the next generation.

Led by Artistic Director and Conductor John Madden, the Savannah Wind Symphony brings together talented musicians from across the region, including educators, professionals, students, retirees, and lifelong performers.

Together, they create concert experiences that are refined, powerful, and deeply connected to the community.
Rooted in Community.
Over the years, the ensemble has evolved through the leadership of devoted music educators and conductors who helped shape its artistic voice, expand its reach, and strengthen its role in the cultural life of Savannah.

Under the direction of Mark Johnson, the group became widely known as the Savannah Wind Symphony, a name that reflects both its musical depth and its connection to the city it proudly represents.
Founded in Collaboration.
Founded in 1977 through a spirit of collaboration between college, high school, and community musicians, the ensemble was created around a simple but lasting idea: that excellent music should bring people together.

What began as a small group rehearsing once a week has grown into a respected community of dedicated musicians, conductors, patrons, and supporters who continue to champion the power of live performance.
The Savannah Wind Symphony has been part of Savannah’s musical landscape for nearly five decades, growing from its early beginnings as the Armstrong Community Band into one of the region’s signature wind ensembles.
